Mary’s Harbour Multi-renewable Micro-grid

  • Optimized renewable energy delivered from multiple sources in an isolated system.
  • Ensured faultless control system operation and validated performance since commissioning in 2021.
  • Validated project dynamic model with measurement campaign during operation, a first in Canada.

Nain Wind-Storage Micro-Grid

  • Validated control strategy for high wind energy penetration with safe diesel plant operation.
  • Validated impact of wind intermittency on operational life of battery energy storage system.
  • Helped client secure utility support on control and operation approach for the project.

Naujaat and Coral Harbour Solar-Storage Micro-Grids

  • Developed and validated system designs that achieve target renewable energy penetrations.
  • Developed Control System and Protection Philosophy that secured Nunavut utility buy-in.

  • Replicated utility diesel plant operation despite gaps in generation outputs.

Rankin Inlet & Baker Lake Wind-Storage Micro-Grids

  • Replicated diesel plant operation with less than 2% uncertainty in EnVision simulator.
  • Validated impact of micro-cycles on BESS lifetime for given wind profiles at the sites.
  • Quantified impact of grid-forming versus no grid-forming operation on renewable energy sold.

Mining Renewables Smart-Grid Project

  • Validated the ability to integrate MW-rated renewables and motors into a weak grid using Grid Adaptr.
  • Helped client secure offer for grant funding to advance the project.
  • Performed EMT simulations to prove compliance with utility interconnection requirements.

Haeckel Hill Hybrid Energy Storage System

  • Determined ESS strategy to address frequency fluctuations experienced by Yukon electric utility.
  • Validated hybrid ESS approach to address Haeckel Hill wind turbines ramping events.
  • Developed HESS controls to optimize cycles and lifetime of the ESS technologies. 

Select Power System Studies

  • Supported design review of major HVDC transmission system in India.
  • Performed System Impact Studies for off-shore oil and gas platforms
  • Supported transmission planning studies for MATL interconnection in Alberta.

  • Identified wind turbine OEM’s obligations to meet New England Grid Code requirements.
  • Performed hosting capacity analyses for various contingency scenarios to size projects.
